I saw the new Sherlock Holmes movie yesterday. I agree that seeing 19th Century London as a squalid place and Holmes as a manic depressive was a lot of fun – the whole steam punk aesthetic kept me entertained for the full two hours. All the Sherlock Holmes films and TV shows I’ve seen tend to ignore his bouts of lethargy when he would lie around the house for weeks at a time doing nothing but cocaine. One recent article in the New York Times argued he might have had Asperger’s Syndrome! (http://www.nytimes.com/2009/12/06/magazine/06diagnosis-t.html)

However, I still thought the movie was rather week. We only got brief glimpses of Holme’s autistic genius – in fact he probably spent far more time with fistfights than deductions. And the villain lacked any kind of depth – he was evil because he was evil (maybe he was still angry about having to play the only unambiguously bad guy in “Syriana”?). I was particularly disappointed that Moriarty appeared only as a shadow. The only reason I could figure out that he was in the film at all was to set up a sequel.

So my review: Nice entertainment but a long ways from a masterpiece!

I think people should support good candidates who are in a position to win, Caroline Lucas, Salma Yaqoob, Dai Davies.

From the CWI obviously Dave Nellist is in the best position to do well.

And support must mean active support, door knocking etc.

glad that green politics is beginning to dawn on the left…but don’t see Son of No2Eu going very far.
